The telecommunications sector has become increasingly important in today’s society. Each and every one of us and our union would not be able to perform basic functions without the services and products that Unifor members provide to the individuals, businesses and institutions we all rely on. They work in all environments from offices, to beneath our city streets, to suburban back yards, or poles on rural roads, to fly in communities in the north or home offices and many more. Services that connect us to healthcare, education, work, daily necessities, entertainment, information, the world and each other.
The Unifor National Telecommunications Council encompasses over 50 local union affiliates from all across Canada working for various companies (Bell, Sasktel, Eastlink, Rogers, Zayo and others) and represents over 18,000 members in the sector. Our goal is to collaborate by sharing the experiences from our different employers and regions in order to further improve the working conditions of our membership and protect the good union jobs that have built and maintain the massive telecommunications network Canadians rely on every day. As a federally regulated industry, we endeavor to consolidate our efforts through this council in order to have a strong voice with the federal government and the regulatory bodies that affect our sector. With the introduction of the fiber optic network on a broader scale, 5G mobile connectivity, the advancement of technology, and the expanding use of artificial intelligence we seek through discussion and the development of policies that make sense for all to ensure a just and fair transition to members working in the industry and Canadian consumers alike.
