A Proud Legacy Since 1942
Unifor Local 240 has been a cornerstone of the Canadian labour movement for more than eight decades. Chartered in 1942, Local 240 made history as the first Technical, Office and Professional (TOP) local within the Canadian United Auto Workers (UAW), establishing a new voice for salaried, office, technical, and professional employees.
On March 17, 1944, Local 240 was officially certified as the collective bargaining agent for salaried and office employees at the Ford Motor Company of Canada in Windsor, Ontario. This milestone marked the beginning of a strong tradition of advocating for fairness, dignity, and improved working conditions. In 1946, members ratified their first collective agreement, laying the foundation for generations of collective bargaining success.
Over the decades, Local 240 evolved from a single workplace local into a diverse amalgamated union representing workers across multiple industries throughout the Windsor-Essex region. Today, the local proudly represents members employed in technical, office, professional, administrative, financial, retail, hospitality, and service sectors.
The Local's membership includes employees at organizations such as GreenShield, CAA, Windsor Salt Ltd., Motor City Community Credit Union, the Giovanni Caboto Club, Freeds, and other respected employers throughout the region. This diversity reflects Local 240's ability to adapt to the changing workplace while remaining committed to protecting workers' rights.
Throughout its history, Unifor Local 240 has remained actively engaged in collective bargaining, workplace advocacy, community service, and social justice initiatives. The Local has stood beside its members during negotiations, strikes, and organizing campaigns, consistently working to achieve fair wages, secure pensions, quality benefits, safe workplaces, and greater job security.
Beyond the workplace, Local 240 is a proud participant in the Windsor-Essex community. Members regularly take part in Labour Day celebrations, charitable initiatives, cultural events, and activities that promote equity, inclusion, and respect for all workers.
Today, as part of Unifor, Canada's largest private-sector union, Local 240 continues to build upon its rich history while preparing for the future. Guided by the principles of solidarity, fairness, and respect, the Local remains committed to representing its members with strength, integrity, and pride.
