Some of you may already be aware that the federal government is proposing an 80% cut to the budget of the Department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE). These drastic reductions pose a serious threat to gender equity and the support systems many rely on across Canada.
WAGE plays a vital role in funding programs that support women, gender-diverse communities, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals. The proposed cuts would not only shrink support for gender-based violence prevention, leadership development, and community safety initiatives—but could also jeopardize the future of the 2SLGBTQI+ Secretariat, a key body advancing equality for marginalized gender and sexual identities.
As trade unionists, we know that equity and justice in our workplaces and communities are inseparable. These cuts go against the very values we fight for every day—inclusion, safety, and dignity for all.
