Unifor Local 531 is strongly condemning the company's ongoing practice of relying on our members, especially those who work below the wing to use their personal cell phones to complete workplace duties.
While the company claims that alternative tools are available, these methods are cumbersome and inefficient in the fast-paced airport environment our members work in. Despite attempting to resolve this issue during the RSA and RSC integration in early 2024, operational leaders continue to pressure our members to use their own phones for tasks such as refueling equipment, scanning QR codes for safety checks, or receiving operational instructions below the wing.
At the time of RSA and RSC integration, we made it clear to the company that using personal phones for work is a serious concern. The company’s official position was that personal devices were not required, and Labour Relations has since confirmed that No employee is required to utilize their personal phones, and if they report to work without one—or choose not to use it—they will still be able to complete their duties.
Despite this out touch statement, the reality on the ground is quite different. Members continue to report being pressured by managers and operational needs to rely on their personal devices to perform assigned tasks.
Your union is directing all members NOT to use their personal cell phones for work.
If a task requires technology, insist on using the company’s provided alternatives—even if those alternatives are slower and less convenient. We understand this may cause delays and frustration, but change will only happen when the company is forced to address the inefficiencies created by its own refusal to equip our members properly. If scanning a QR code takes five minutes longer because you have to use a shared company issued phone or paper log, so be it. If an aircraft departs late because tasks take longer without using your own personal devices, let that responsibility fall where it belongs, on the employer.
Your personal phone is your property. The company has no right to expect you to use it for their benefit without compensation, protection, or consent. If you experience pressure or retaliation for refusing to use your personal device, please report it immediately to the Unit Chair at your base.
