We want to congratulate the WestJet Crew Schedulers who filed their application with the Canadian Industrial Relations Board. This progress is inspiring and it shows what's possible when we stand together. The application represents Crew Schedulers, Lead Crew Schedulers and Shift Lead Crew Schedulers at WestJet.
In the coming days and weeks, the CIRB will begin its standard process. Here’s what to expect:
- The CIRB will verify the membership evidence submitted with our application to confirm that a sufficient number of employees in the proposed bargaining unit have signed valid membership cards.
- The Board will contact WestJet to confirm the full list of employees in your group as of the date of application. This helps ensure everyone who should be included is accounted for.
- Once the Board is satisfied with the membership support and employee count, it will issue a notice to the employer and the union—this includes the opportunity for either party to raise any objections or concerns regarding the proposed bargaining unit.
What is Certification?
Certification is the formal process by which a union becomes the legal bargaining agent for a group of workers. Once certified, the union has the legal right to negotiate with the employer on behalf of its members.
Why It Matters
Filing for certification protects workers’ rights to organize and creates a legal framework for collective bargaining. It ensures that employees have a voice in their workplace and access to fair representation.
