Use Wifi - using wifi whether at work or at home, will ensure you don't incur roaming charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the devices tracked?  Yes, the IT team is able to track the devices in case they are lost in an attempt to recover the device. However, the company is not tracking employees and their whereabouts.  Ensure you keep the device charged, with the location services and cellular enabled to assist in recovery if it ever gets lost or stolen.

Can I be disciplined if I lose or break the iPad? The Company has the right to investigate and determine disciplinary action for negligent loss or damage of the device. For example, at home you allow your toddler to play with the device and the screen gets cracked when they throw it to the ground is different if an angry passenger at work knocks it out of your hands.  Keeping your device in a safe space at home, not accessible to family members is a best practice.  If you leave your iPad on the seat of your unlocked car and it gets stolen, it would be considered negligent versus if your home being broken into and it was stolen with other personal belongings.  In any case of a lost or damaged item, it is important to inform the union so we are able to support you through the process and we strongly suggest obtaining a Police report if it does get stolen.  As a reminder, according to Article 17 - Discipline and Discharge in our CBA, discipline issued to employees stays on their records for 24 months and anything higher than a written warning excludes employees for applying for positions in the Airport Operations Band.

Can the company charge me money for a lost or damaged device? No. When the iPad concept was introduced to the union as the headquarters level in 2024, the company had proposed an amendment to our collective agreement that is very similar to the article in the CUPE inflight agreement.  This would have made our members responsible for any costs associated with loss or damage of the device.  The union had concerns regarding these costs of replacing the company issued devices because many of our members are low wage workers and to bear the financial burden would be detrimental to our members.  As a result of this, the union did not agree to any financial charges against our members.

Can I be sent home to retrieve my iPad if I leave it at home? Yes, the iPad is considered a part of your uniform and the expectation is that it is fully charged and ready to use while on shift.  You will be marked Absent-Not Paid during the time it takes for you to collect your iPad.

Can I take my iPad with me on vacation? No, leave your iPad at home.  Travelling with your company issued iPad could incurr roaming charges if you are not on wifi and the risk of it being damaged or lost / stolen is too high.  Consider your iPad a piece of your uniform...you wouldn't take your dress or tie with you on vacation, so leave the iPad at home in a safe place!

To report your device stolen, many jurisdictions allow you to report theft under  $5,000 online.
