Member Safety Concerns - Potential Air Canada Picket Lines

Share

On behalf Local 531, President Karen Berry, reached out to the WestJet Labour Relations team as well as VP-Airports, Dave Powell today to ask the company to establish and communicate a clear protocol for safe access to our member's work locations.  The union is concerned about the safety and well-being of our members when picket lines are present due to the possibility of strike action by Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants.

The union's concern is not with our fellow union members exercising their lawful rights under the Labour Code, which we fully support and respect, but rather with the risk that some individuals may see our members work locations as an opportunity for confrontation or provocation. Karen assured the company that our members remain committed to the terms of our Collective Agreement AND supporting unionized workers in their efforts to improve working conditions.  However, at the same time, we have a duty to ensure the safety and security of our own members.

As this is an evolving situation, the union will continue to provide updates to members via the Local 531 website.  If you have any questions, please reach out to your Unit Chair at your Base.
