Member Education - Active Shooter at Work

Share

In light of the recent and concerning shooting at Terminal 1 in Toronto, we want to take a moment to focus on something that matters above all else—your safety.

As airport employees, we work in a high-traffic, public environment where unexpected situations can unfold in seconds. While we hope to never encounter such a crisis, being prepared and informed is our best defense.

What You Need to Know: “Run. Hide. Fight.”

These three words could save your life. This is the foundation of the active shooter response model.

  • RUN: If you hear gunshots or see signs of danger, and it’s safe to do so, get away from the threat as quickly as possible. Leave your belongings behind. Encourage others to come with you, but don’t wait for them.
  • HIDE: If escape isn’t possible, find a secure hiding place. Lock or barricade doors. Hide on an aircraft, go outside on the ramp, head down the baggage belt. Turn off lights, silence phones, and remain quiet.
  • FIGHT: As a last resort, and only if your life is in immediate danger, use whatever is at your disposal to disrupt or incapacitate the shooter.

Know Your Surroundings

  • Take time during your shifts to identify exit routes and secure hiding spots near your work areas.
  • Be aware of public access points and stay alert for suspicious behavior. If you see something, say something.
  • Keep up with your required learnings at work.

Your union is here to support your right to a safe workplace. If you feel your work area lacks safety measures or if you’re unsure of what to do in an emergency, speak to your Occupational Health and Safety Committee members, DPM or operational leaders. You can also reach out to your Unit Chair at your base.

Stay aware, and be ready—not fearful, but informed.
