Changes to the Canadian federal and British Columbia provincial minimum wages will impact some of our newly hired members. These increases will bring adjustments to Step 1 wages but will not affect other pay steps within our wage scale.
Federal Minimum Wage Increase
The Canadian federal minimum wage is set to increase on April 1, 2025 to $17.75 ensuring that workers under federal jurisdiction receive a wage adjustment. For our members currently at Step 1 of the pay scale ($17.53 currently), this means an increase in their hourly rate to align with the new federal minimum wage. However, this increase will not result in adjustments for members at higher pay steps—only those at Step 1 will see a change.
British Columbia Minimum Wage Increase
Members working in YVR will also benefit from the upcoming British Columbia minimum wage increase on June 1, 2025 to $17.85 As outlined in Article 6-2.01 of our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), “If a province’s minimum wage rate exceeds the entry rate of any wage scale, the first step of the scale will be adjusted to the minimum wage for that province.” This means that the Step 1 wage rate for YVR employees will be adjusted to match the new BC minimum wage.
While these increases provide a necessary adjustment for our lowest-paid members, we recognize that wage progression and fair compensation at all levels remain critical priorities. As we approach our next round of bargaining in 2026, we will continue advocating for competitive living wages and improvements that benefit all members.
